Where it grows
This caudiciform succulent is native to Mexico.
Special features
Calibanus hookeri is a large growing caudiciform plant. It has an attractive caudex with ‘grass-like’ leaves. Each set of leaves sprouting from the caudex is thought to actually be an independent plant. Once each leaf producing stem has flowered and made fruit, the individual stem will die, but a new branch will replace it.
Care guide
Calibanus hookeri prefers being kept in full sunlight to mimic its natural environment. This species prefers a gritty, inorganic mix that drains well, with components such as akadama, pumice and perlite. Only water this plant in spring and summer. Keep it completely dry during the rest of the year.
Growing season
Spring and summer.
