About Us

Living Desert Plants is a specialist rare plant nursery. Our focus is placed on succulents that are not generally available in large retail nurseries, with much of our range being imported and propagated before being made available. At Living Desert Plants, you will find the weird and wonderful that you cannot find elsewhere.

From a tiny collection on a single table, to a menagerie now numbering in the thousands, this is the LDP story.

This venture found its roots as a hobby-turned-business created by Harry Lewis in early 2018. Harry was able to get the nursery up and running using valuable knowledge gained from his years as a nature conservationist. His respect and admiration for nature is at the core of LDP’s ethos, and this extends to the plants in our care. Whether it’s plants for sale or plants in our personal collections, we give them the individual attention they deserve, and provide them with the highest possible standard of care.

As the collection of rare exotic and indigenous succulents grew, the business needed to expand. In December 2021, LDP overhauled its brand identity. The website was completely rebuilt, and a large variety of new plants and accessories was made available for sale online.

Then, a year later in December 2022, we moved the entire nursery to Fish Hoek, in Cape Town. All the plants from Stellenbosch were consolidated and moved to ‘the valley’, where we hope to build the stable future of the business in the coming years.

Visitors are welcome to make an appointment any day of the week to visit the nursery in Fish Hoek, Cape Town. Harry is not always available, so be sure to contact him well before your planned visit to avoid disappointment.

If you are not in Cape Town or surrounds, we can courier anywhere in South Africa with The Courier Guy.

All our plants are legal, nursery grown specimens. We have been certified by Cape Nature as a registered Grower and Seller of Protected Flora since 21/05/2018.

Not sure where to start?

When deciding which plants to buy, the most important consideration is where your plant is going to live. Different succulents need different light conditions.
