Botanical Curator: Haworthia and Clivia Breeding App

Plant breeding app for iPhone and Android

Track every cross, pedigree and pollen batch in one app

Botanical Curator is the breeding logbook for serious Haworthia and Clivia growers. Record pollinations, follow seed through to seedlings, keep your pollen freezer in order and see which plants will flower together next season.

Breeding records belong in one place

Years of crosses are hard to reconstruct from notebooks, plant tags and spreadsheets. Botanical Curator keeps the whole chain linked, from the pollen in the freezer to the seedling in the pot.

Without it

  • Parentage lives on pot labels that fade
  • Pollen age is a guess, and so is the freezer tube
  • Harvest windows slip past and seed is lost
  • Which seedlings came from which sowing is unclear

With Botanical Curator

  • Every plant carries its seed parent, pollen parent and origin cross
  • Pollen is dated, located and flagged when it gets old
  • A harvest reminder fires on the expected date
  • Seedlings are named and linked back to the exact sowing
Inventory

A photo-first collection you can actually browse

Every plant gets a card with its photo, botanical name and phenotype. Add up to 12 photos per plant, choose the main image, and correct photo dates when you are adding older pictures.

  • Five categories you can combine: Breeding, Collection, Seedling, Own Breeding and Reference Cultivar
  • Keep reference cultivars you do not own so you can name them as parents
  • Search and filter, with a family switcher for Haworthia, Clivia and Other
  • Export and import your inventory as CSV

Pedigree and genetics

Know exactly where every plant came from

Record seed and pollen parents and drill back through three generations. Flag recessive carriers, and the app tells you when two parents share a hidden trait.

  • Three-generation pedigree you can tap through
  • Split and carrier tags, with a compatibility hint when both parents carry the same one
  • Related-parent notice for backcrosses and shared ancestors
  • Heritage composition for interspecific and intergeneric plants, averaged from the parents
  • Split Offset names pups automatically (Pup A, Pup B and on) and carries the pedigree across

Crosses

From pollination to harvest without losing the thread

Each cross shows its seed parent and pollen parent side by side. Log the pollination, the fruit set, the harvest and the seed count, and the app works out the rates for you.

  • Fruit set percentage and average seeds per berry or capsule
  • Expected harvest date from the family: about 10 months for Clivia berries, about 2 months for Haworthia capsules
  • Harvest reminder notification on the expected date
  • Pick from your stored pollen and the batch count drops automatically

Sowing and seedlings

Raise seedlings that remember their parents

Record the sowing date, seeds sown and first germination. Then raise seedlings straight from the cross: each one is named, tagged with its family, parents and heritage, and linked back to the sowing it came from.

  • Germination rate and days to germination worked out for you
  • Seedling names count up (CODE-1, CODE-2) and are never reused, even after a delete
  • Record seedling pigmentation to follow colour lines early

Pollen inventory

A freezer log that tells you when pollen is getting old

Log each batch with its source plant, freezer location, quantity and viability notes. A colour-coded age badge shows how long it has been stored, and batches past six months are flagged as likely stale.

  • Source plant photo on every card, so you recognise the pollen at a glance
  • Depleted batches marked automatically
  • Search by source, freezer box or viability notes

Bloom analytics

See which plants will flower together next season

Log flowering dates year after year. Botanical Curator estimates each plant’s peak window and pairs the plants whose windows overlap, so you know when a cross is makeable.

  • Predicted peak window per plant, sharpened by first bud and last flower drop dates
  • Natural pairings ranked by overlap
  • Flowering log on every plant to track stability over time

Backup and sharing

Your collection stays yours

Everything is stored on your device and the app works fully offline. Connect a Google account only if you want backup, restore or sharing. The app only ever touches files it created.

  • One-tap backup of records and photos to your Google Drive, re-uploading only changed photos
  • Restore on a new phone, merging rather than overwriting
  • Share your collection with a breeding partner, with optional edit access
  • Deleted records are kept for 30 days so an older backup can bring them back

  • Heritage tracked at genus level for Haworthia, Haworthiopsis and Tulista crosses
  • Capsule terminology and a short harvest window
  • Variegation terms such as nishiki and aurea

Clivia

  • Flower colour, flower form and leaf shape suggestions
  • Split tags for peach, yellow groups, green, bronze and pastel
  • Heritage tracked at species level for interspecific work
  • Berry terminology and a 10 month harvest window

Made by growers, for growers

Botanical Curator comes from Living Desert Plants, a specialist succulent nursery in Stellenbosch, South Africa. It was built for Harry and Skye’s own Haworthia and Clivia breeding programmes and shaped by how real breeders work.

Questions growers ask

How much does Botanical Curator cost?

Botanical Curator is R150 on the App Store and Google Play.

Which plants does it support?

It is built around Haworthia and Clivia, with suggestion lists and terminology for each. Any other plant can be logged under Other, because genus and species are free text.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Your collection is stored on your device and the app works fully offline. A Google account is only needed for backup, restore and sharing.

How do I back up my collection?

Connect a Google account in Backup and Sharing and tap Back Up Now. Your records and photos go to a folder in your own Google Drive. Restoring on a new phone merges your backup in, so nothing is overwritten or deleted.

Can I share my collection with a breeding partner?

Yes. Enter your partner’s Google email, choose whether they can edit, and share. They can restore your collection into their own copy of the app.

Can I import and export my data?

Yes. You can export and import your plants and crosses as CSV files.

I used Clivia Curator. Will I lose my data?

No. Botanical Curator replaces Clivia Curator as an update and keeps your existing records.
