This specialized variety stands out due to its intense white coloration, which results from a thick layer of protective epicuticular wax. It produces rigid, woody peduncles along the rib ridges that closely resemble the sharp spines of a true cactus. It forms dense, multi-stemmed clumps over time, branching mainly from the base of the primary barrel.
Origin and Natural Habitat
This variety originates from the arid Willowmore and Steytlerville districts within the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The plants thrive on dry, rocky hillsides, quartz flats, and ironstone ridges. They grow under harsh conditions characterized by low, erratic rainfall and intense ultraviolet radiation. The thick, waxy white coating acts as a natural sunblock. It reflects intense sunlight and reduces moisture loss in the dry, wind-swept interior valleys.
Plant Characteristics
The upright stems of Euphorbia horrida v. alba reach heights of 15 cm to 25 cm with a diameter of roughly 10 cm to 15 cm. Each stem features 10 to 14 deep, wavy ribs lined with persistent, spine-like flower stalks. It produces tiny, greenish-yellow cyathia at the stem apex during the summer months. The plant produces a sticky, caustic white latex when damaged, which protects it from browsing animals. It grows slowly and develops a highly irregular, rugged appearance with age.

Light
This plant requires maximum light exposure to maintain its chalky white skin color and compact shape. Provide at least six hours of direct morning sunlight daily. In a greenhouse setting, use a very light 20% shade cloth only during severe mid-summer heatwaves. Inadequate light causes the new growth to thin out and turn green, which permanently ruins the barrel shape.
Soil
