Origin and Natural Habitat
This Hoya species is indigenous to Bengkulu forest in Sumatra. It is a currently unnamed, relatively recently discovered species.
Plant Characteristics
Hoya ‘Rindu Rafflesia’ has attractive, elongated leaves covered in white splotches of natural variegation. It produces unique yellow and white flowers.
Care Guide
Light
Hoya prefer shady conditions, and will have great colouration if kept under 60-80% shade cloth. It should not be kept in full sun.
Soil
Hoya requires a well-draining soil mixture with plenty of organic components. A medium with coco peat is preferred.
Water
In cultivation, Hoya can be watered well during the warmer months. However, keep this plant partially dry in winter when it is dormant, only watering if the leaves become dehydrated.
Pot size
This is a vining species, and prefers a hanging basket or large pot and trellis to grow into.
Temperature
This species’ ideal temperature ranges between 20 – 30°C. It can tolerate 10 – 40°C and is extremely sensitive to frost.
Humidity
Hoya ‘Rindu Rafflesia’ enjoys humidity, but make sure that your growing space still has some airflow, particularly in winter.
Fertilizing
Use a half-strength diluted general liquid fertilizer only during the growing season. Do not fertilize during winter. Alternatively, a small amount of slow-release fertilizer will be sufficient.
Growing season
Hoya ‘Rindu Rafflesia’ is in active growth during spring and summer.
Propagation
This species of Hoya is best propagated from stem cuttings.
Stem propagation: Using a sharp, clean knife, cut an offset about 30% of the size of the mature plant from the main stem. Let this dry for 5 days, then plant it. The best time to propagate is early spring.
