Whether it’s a new plant or one that’s been in your collection for years, you have to consider a few aspects about your succulent to find the pot best suited to it.
What does my plant’s root system look like?
Succulents have a variety of root systems, and it is important to choose a pot that will accommodate your plant’s roots. If it has a large taproot system, like the famous Lophophora or peyote, then it will need a deeper pot. Creeping plants like the String of Million Hearts can do well in a hanging basket, but grow quite fast when given a wide, spacious bowl to fill, as they make small, fibrous roots along their stems. This also means they do well in shallow pots.
Will my plant have a growth spurt?
Get a pot that is big enough to accommodate a plant’s growth for at least the next two or three years. Don’t stress the plant by replanting it every year! It’s better to plan ahead and keep your plant stable and happy.
How much pot space do I have in my succulent plant collection?
Greenhouse space is a constant need in the life of a succulent fanatic. The type of pot you use plays a large role in how many plants you can fit into your collection. Square pots are ideal space savers, as they can snugly fit in next to each other. It would be better to start off with square pots if you haven’t gotten your spacious ‘dream greenhouse’ yet, then it might be better to start off with square pots. It is up to personal choice, though, as round pots are quite attractive despite not being as space efficient as square pots.

How long do I want my succulent plant pot to last?
It is super important to get durable pots, otherwise you will constantly be replacing pots and repotting plants. If you keep pots outside in sunlight, even filtered sunlight, over time they can start to disintegrate. If the pot bends quite a lot when you squeeze it, that usually means it won’t last long. Make sure to check for thick, strong plastic when you make a pot purchase.
