Adenium obesum AO51

Adenium obesum combines a thick, naturally swollen succulent caudex with specialized scions that produce highly unique flower colors instead of the standard pink. These specific specimens feature professional flat-grafts on mature rootstocks, securing rare multi-petal, deep red, yellow, dark purple, or bi-color blossoms. The plant grows as an upright succulent shrublet, developing a smooth grey trunk that stores water while supporting a dense canopy of glossy green leaves. Each plants only has one single colour.

Origin and Natural Habitat

The parent species occurs natively across the arid sub-Saharan regions of Africa, stretching from Senegal through Sudan to Kenya, as well as parts of the Arabian Peninsula. These plants inhabit open, sunny savanna woodlands, rocky granite kopjes, and dry coastal scrub. They thrive in tropical climates characterized by distinct wet and dry seasonal cycles. Horticultural breeders in Southeast Asia and Taiwan selected these colorful cultivars over decades of intensive line-breeding, grafting the delicate flower varieties onto wild, vigorous seed-grown rootstocks to maximize growth rate and disease resistance.

Plant Characteristics

The bottle-shaped caudex of Adenium obesum branches close to the ground, forming a heavy base that tapers into upright, fleshy stems. The obovate leaves feature a smooth, shiny upper surface and cluster tightly at the growing tips during the warm season. It blooms in multiple intense flushes from spring through autumn, displaying large, trumpet-shaped flowers that vary significantly by cultivar. The entire plant body contains a sticky, highly toxic milky sap that serves as a defense mechanism against insects and grazing pests.

Care Guide

Light
This desert succulent requires maximum sun exposure to maintain tight branch growth and stimulate continuous flower production. Provide six to eight hours of direct daily sunlight in a completely unshaded position. Insufficient light causing long, soft stems will reduce the number of flower buds.

Soil
The roots require an open, fast-draining mineral potting medium to eliminate any risk of root rot. The LDP Super Drainage Mix provides the ideal substrate, with high-grade coarse pumice and akadama. Avoid dense garden soils or commercial mixes that contain water-retaining peat moss.

Water
Water the plant thoroughly during the warm spring and summer months only after the potting substrate dries out completely. Follow the standard soak and dry method while the plant actively grows. Taper watering frequency significantly in autumn as the temperatures drop, and keep the soil dry during winter dormancy.

Pot size
Select a broad, relatively shallow terracotta pot that allows the mineral soil to dry out rapidly after watering. Porous clay walls help extract excess water from the root zone, reducing the chance of accidental overwatering. Leave roughly 3 cm of empty space around the sides of the caudex.

Temperature
This tropical species demands consistent warmth, thriving in temperatures between 24°C and 35°C. It suffers tissue damage and drops its leaves if temperatures drop below 12°C. Move the plant indoors or place it inside a heated greenhouse before severe winter weather hits.

Humidity
Maintain low to moderate air humidity in the growing area. Stagnant, humid conditions promote fungal infections on the leaves and can cause the graft union to fail. Ensure excellent, continuous air movement around the branches by using fans or keeping window vents open.

Fertilizing
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once every three weeks during the peak summer flowering season. Do not feed the plant during autumn or winter. Excessive nitrogen causes weak, elongated branches that cannot support the heavy flower clusters.

Growing Season

Adenium obesum grows actively from early spring to late autumn, utilizing the heat to push out new leaves and successive flushes of flowers. The plant enters a protective dormancy phase during winter, dropping its foliage to preserve its internal water reserves. It requires an undisturbed dry winter rest.

Propagation

You can propagate these specific flower cultivars successfully using top-grafting or by rooting stem cuttings.

Top-Grafting: Select a healthy branch tip from the desired color cultivar during the active summer growth period. Make a flat, horizontal cut across a vigorous, seed-grown Adenium rootstock using a sterile razor blade. Match the scion cutting precisely onto the cut surface of the rootstock, ensuring the circular vascular rings align. Secure the graft firmly using specialized grafting tape or a plastic overlay, keeping the plant in a shaded, warm room for ten days until the tissues fuse completely.

Stem Cuttings: Cut a mature stem section from the cultivar branches in mid-summer using a sharp, sanitized blade. Allow the cutting to dry in a well-ventilated space for two weeks until a firm, dry callus seals the wound. Insert the callused base into a pot filled with dry coarse grit or river sand, keeping it warm and bright. Avoid heavy watering until the cutting develops roots, which normally takes four to six weeks.

Product FAQS

To mimic their natural environments, succulents should receive infrequent, but heavy watering during their growing season. Soak the soil once every 10-14 days, then allow it to dry before watering again.
