Echinopsis hybrid – Salmon
Echinopsis hybrids produce massive, funnel-shaped flowers in vivid shades of Salmon atop ribbed, cylindrical stems. These spectacular cultivars blossom repeatedly throughout spring and summer, opening flowers that dwarf the underlying cactus bodies. Please note: All of these plants are seed grown, so the colours may differ slightly from that pictured in the photo, but will be a shade of Salmon. The stems may also differ from the one indicated in the photos.
Origin and Natural Habitat
Parent species originate from grasslands, rocky hillsides, and high-altitude Andean slopes across South America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Plants grow in well-draining mineral soils exposed to intense solar radiation and variable rainfall.
Plant Characteristics
The globose to cylindrical stems grow up to thirty centimeters tall, developing multiple vertical ribs lined with spine-bearing areoles. Large, nocturnal or diurnal flowers stretch up to twenty centimeters in length and diameter, emerging on long hairy floral tubes from upper areoles. Plants cluster over time by producing offsets around the stem base. The root system consists of fibrous roots requiring proper aeration.
Care Guide
Light
Provide bright, direct sunlight or intense morning exposure. Full sun maintains rigid stem growth and triggers abundant flower bud production. Insufficient light causes weak, elongated growth and prevents flowering.
Soil
The sensitive root system demands rapid drainage to prevent fatal root rot. Plant the specimen in LDP Super Drainage Mix to ensure quick water runoff and proper root oxygenation.
Water
Water thoroughly during active spring and summer growth phases. Allow the substrate to dry out completely between watering sessions. Withhold all moisture entirely during the cool winter dormancy period.
Pot Size
Select a shallow pot or terracotta container matching the root ball diameter. Avoid oversized containers that retain excess moisture around the base.
Temperature
Keep ambient temperatures between 10°C and 32°C. Cool, dry winter dormancy temperatures down to 5°C encourage spring flower bud initiation. Protect plants from prolonged wet freezing conditions.
Humidity
Maintain low humidity and high airflow. Stagnant air invites fungal rot during damp periods.
Fertilizing
Apply a high-potassium liquid cactus fertilizer diluted to quarter strength once a month during spring and summer. Stop fertilizing completely during autumn and winter.
Growing Season
Echinopsis hybrids grow actively during spring and summer. They enter dormancy during autumn and winter.
Propagation
You can propagate these plants through offset division or seed.
Offset Division
Detach healthy basal offsets using a sterile blade during spring repotting. Allow the cut base to dry in a shaded, well-ventilated area for five days until a solid callus forms. Press the base into dry LDP Super Drainage Mix. Keep the cutting in bright indirect light and mist lightly after one week to trigger root initiation. Offset division preserves the exact flower color and genetic traits of the hybrid parent.
Seed
Sow mature hybrid seeds onto the surface of a sterilized, gritty mineral substrate during spring. Maintain high moisture under a transparent cover until germination occurs. Remove the lid gradually after seedlings emerge to harden the young plants. Keep containers in bright indirect light and maintain light moisture during their first active growth season. Seedlings will display unique genetic variations in flower color and stem form.
