Origin and Natural Habitat
Euphorbia cylindrifolia v. tuberifera is a caudiciform succulent endemic to Madagascar. It typically grows in the shade of bushes in dry, deciduous forests dominated by Alluadia species.
Plant Characteristics
This variety is distinct for its underground, caudiciform root system. Above ground, it produces spreading, cylindrical branches that are covered in small, scale-like leaf scars. The leaves are narrow and often take on a reddish-bronze tint when exposed to bright light. It is a slow-growing species that forms an attractive mat of tangled branches over time. The flowers are small and greenish-brown, appearing near the tips of the stems.
Care Guide
Light
This species prefers bright, filtered light. While it enjoys a few hours of direct morning sun, it should be protected from midday sun. We recommend 60% shade cloth to maintain healthy growth and rich leaf colour.
Soil
A gritty, inorganic mix is essential. Use a substrate high in pumice and akadama, with no organic material.
Water
Water thoroughly, but infrequently, during the warm spring and summer months. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. Do not water at all in winter.
Pot size
Use a pot that comfortably accommodates the tuberous root system. Terracotta pots are recommended as they allow the soil to breathe and dry out more evenly. As the plant forms a creeping mat, a wider, shallower pot is often more suitable than a deep, narrow one.
Temperature
This Euphorbia prefers warmth and should ideally be kept above 20Β°C. It is not frost-hardy and will struggle if temperatures drop consistently below 10Β°C.
Humidity
It can tolerate average household humidity but appreciates good air circulation. In very humid environments, ensure the soil is exceptionally well-draining to compensate for the slower evaporation rate.
Fertilizing
Apply a balanced, half-strength liquid fertilizer once per month during the spring and summer growing season. Avoid feeding during winter dormancy.
Growing season
Euphorbia cylindrifolia v. tuberifera is a summer-grower. It will put on most of its growth during the warmest months of the year. It may drop some leaves and will stop growing entirely during winter.
Propagation
Propagation is most successful via seed, or by dividing the tuberous roots.
Seed germination: Seeds should be sown in early spring. Plant them in a mix of coco peat and perlite, with some vermiculite, in an airtight container. Once most of the seeds have germinated, remove the lid of the container to allow airflow. Gently mist the seedlings every few days so that the soil does not dry out.
Cuttings: Cuttings can be taken, but like many caudiciforms, they may not develop a caudex like a seed-grown plant. If you take cuttings, allow the latex to dry and the wound to callous for two weeks before planting it in a gritty rooting medium.
