Euphorbia millotii

Euphorbia millotii grows as a highly unusual, semi-deciduous succulent shrublet with semi-translucent, pale green or bronze-tinted branches that peel with age. This critically endangered Malagasy endemic immediately catches attention with its brilliant, deep ruby-red or purplish leaf undersides that contrast sharply against the bright green upper surfaces. The plant forms a compact, crown-like canopy on top of sprawling, succulent stems that lack the typical heavy spines found on related species.

Origin and Natural Habitat

This rare species occurs natively only within a highly restricted coastal strip in northern Madagascar, specifically near Vohémar. It inhabits low-altitude coastal dune forests and tropical deciduous thickets growing almost entirely in loose, nutrient-poor littoral sands. The plants grow under the shade of taller forest canopies, which shields them from burning, direct midday sun. This specific environment experiences a warm tropical climate with high seasonal rainfall followed by a distinct winter dry period where moisture becomes extremely scarce.

Plant Characteristics

The cylindrical, fleshy stems of Euphorbia millotii reach roughly 20 cm to 50 cm in height, branching primarily from the lower trunk base. The obovate leaves possess a smooth, rubbery texture and cluster densely toward the tips of the growing branches during summer. It produces tiny, inconspicuous green cyathia surrounded by cup-shaped, pale green or pinkish bracts during late spring. Like most members of its genus, the entire stem system carries a highly irritating, toxic white latex sap that deters chewing insects and root pests.

Care Guide

Light
This forest-dwelling succulent prefers bright, filtered light or morning sun rather than intense, direct afternoon exposure. Provide filtered greenhouse light or a spot that receives soft morning sunlight to keep the leaf undersides a deep red color. Blistering midday sun will scorch the thin foliage and leave permanent yellow patches on the stems.

Soil
The fine root system requires an exceptionally open, gritty substrate that mimics loose coastal sand dunes to prevent rot. The LDP Super Drainage Mix provides the perfect airy medium, combining pumice and akadama. Avoid heavy, standard garden soils or peat-heavy potting mixes that compact and hold stale water around the roots.

Water
Water the plant thoroughly during the warm spring and summer months as soon as the potting substrate dries out down to the middle of the container. Use a standard soak and dry approach while the plant holds active green leaves. Reduce your watering frequency significantly in autumn as the leaves begin to yellow and drop. Keep the soil almost completely dry during the winter rest phase.

Pot size
Select a small, well-draining clay or terracotta pot that matches the current size of the shallow root canopy. A smaller container ensures the mineral soil mix dries out quickly and does not hold pockets of dampness. Leave roughly 2 cm of space around the central stems when potting up.

Temperature
This tropical variety requires consistent warmth throughout the year, thriving in temperatures between 22°C and 32°C. It has zero tolerance for cold conditions and drops its leaves immediately if temperatures fall below 15°C. Bring the container indoors into a warm room or place it inside a heated greenhouse before winter cold snaps arrive.

Humidity
This species enjoys moderate humidity levels unlike typical desert cacti, owing to its coastal forest origin. It still requires excellent, active air movement to prevent fungal spot diseases from marking the leaves. Use ventilation fans or open side vents to keep the air moving freely around the plant canopy.

Fertilizing
Apply a balanced liquid succulent fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength once every four weeks during the summer growing season. Do not feed the plant at all during the winter dormancy period. Excess fertilizer forces weak, elongated branch growth that ruins the natural compact shrub habit.

Growing Season

Euphorbia millotii grows actively from early spring through late summer, pushing out new bronze leaves and small green cyathia. It enters a natural dormancy phase during the cold winter months, dropping most of its foliage to preserve internal moisture. The plant requires minimal disturbance and absolute dryness during this winter rest period.

Propagation

You can propagate this species successfully by taking stem cuttings or by sowing fresh seeds.

Stem Cuttings: Sever a mature stem cutting from the parent plant during the active summer growth period using a sharp, sterile blade. Wash away the oozing white sap immediately with cold water to prevent it from sealing the cutting prematurely. Allow the cutting to dry in a shady, warm room for two weeks until a firm callus seals the wound. Insert the callused base into a pot filled with fine quartz sand, keeping it warm and barely damp until roots develop after four to six weeks.

Seed Sowing: Sow fresh seeds in mid-summer when ambient daytime temperatures stay consistently above 24°C. Press the seeds lightly into a moist mineral potting mix and cover them with a very thin 2 mm layer of fine gravel grit. Keep the sowing tray under bright, indirect light while maintaining light surface humidity until the seedlings emerge. Provide immediate ventilation to the young plants to avoid damping-off issues.

Product FAQS

To mimic their natural environments, succulents should receive infrequent, but heavy watering during their growing season. Soak the soil once every 10-14 days, then allow it to dry before watering again.
