Euphorbia obesa x globosa is a popular interspecific hybrid that combines the structural characteristics of its two parent species. It typically inherits the globose, seam-stitched body of Euphorbia obesa and the clumping, branching habit of Euphorbia globosa. The resulting plant often forms a central spherical body that produces numerous smaller, ball-like offsets from its base or sides, eventually creating a dense, mounded cluster of globose stems.
Origin and Natural Habitat
This plant is a horticultural hybrid and does not occur naturally in the wild. Its parents are both native to the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Euphorbia obesa originates from the Karoo regions near Graaff-Reinet, while Euphorbia globosa is found in the sandy, coastal succulent thickets near Port Elizabeth.
Plant Characteristics
The body of the plant is usually spineless and displays a dull green to grey-green epidermis. Depending on the specific clone, it may show the faint horizontal banding or “plaid” pattern characteristic of E. obesa. The stems are divided into vertical ribs with small, inconspicuous flowering nodes (cyathia) along the ridges.
It is often referred to as Euphorbia pseudoglobosa, or Euphorbia obesa f. monstruosa, but it is a hybrid.

Light
Euphorbia obesa x globosa requires bright, indirect light or several hours of morning sun to maintain its tight, spherical growth. In a greenhouse, 40% to 50% shade cloth is ideal. If the plant receives insufficient light, the globose heads will stretch and become cylindrical, a process known as etiolation. Avoid intense, direct afternoon sun in summer to prevent permanent scorching of the epidermis.
Soil
A gritty, inorganic soil medium, such as Ibaraki Akadama or Hyuga pumice, is essential for this hybrid.
Water
Water the plant thoroughly during the summer growing season, but only once the soil has dried out completely. The “soak and dry” method is most effective. As temperatures drop in autumn, reduce watering frequency. During the winter months, keep the plant almost entirely dry to prevent rot while it is in a semi-dormant state.
Pot size
Select a pot that is only slightly larger than the plant or the current cluster. Because this hybrid clumps laterally, a wide, shallow pot or “pan” is often more suitable than a deep container. Terracotta is the preferred material as it allows the soil to breathe and dry out more evenly than plastic or glazed ceramic.
Temperature
This hybrid thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 28°C. It is sensitive to extreme cold and should not be exposed to temperatures below 10°C for extended periods. It is not frost-hardy. During the winter, ensure the plant stays in a dry, frost-free location with good ventilation.
Humidity
Low to average humidity is best. Like its parents, this hybrid is susceptible to fungal infections in stagnant, humid air. Ensure that your growing area has consistent airflow, especially during the warmer months when the plant is being watered regularly.
Fertilizing
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength once every four to six weeks during the spring and summer. Stop fertilizing in autumn and winter. Proper feeding supports the production of new offsets and keeps the parent body healthy.
Growing season
Euphorbia obesa x globosa is a summer grower. It shows the most active development from late spring through early autumn. During this time, it will produce new offsets and small, yellowish-green flowers. Growth slows down significantly in winter, and the plant requires minimal attention during this rest period.
Propagation
Propagation is most easily achieved by removing the offsets or “pups” that form around the base.
Offsets: Carefully detach a small offset during the spring or summer. Use a clean, sharp blade and immediately rinse the cut end of both the offset and the parent plant with water to stop the latex flow. Allow the offset to callus in a cool, dry place for at least a week. Once the wound is dry and firm, place the offset in a gritty rooting medium and withhold water for several days until roots begin to form.
