Euphorbia pseudocactus is a succulent, spiny shrub in the family Euphorbiaceae. It features upright, segmented stems that are typically four-angled, though three or five angles can occur. The epidermis displays a distinctive mottled pattern of yellowish-green and darker green, which often creates a series of U-shaped or V-shaped markings between the ribs. This striking coloration serves as the primary distinguishing feature of the species.
Origin and Natural Habitat
This species is native to the subtropical regions of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It typically grows in thorny bushveld, subtropical thickets, and among rocky outcrops. In its natural habitat, it forms large, dense clumps or thickets. The mottled patterning on the stems provides a level of camouflage, helping the plant blend into the dappled light and shadows of the surrounding scrub vegetation.
Plant Characteristics
The plant grows as a multi-stemmed shrub, reaching heights of 60 cm to 1.2 meters. The stems are divided into segments that represent each season’s growth, with narrowed joints between them. Pairs of stout, brownish spines emerge from the horny grey margins of the ribs. Small, yellowish-green flowers called cyathia appear along the ridges of the upper stem segments during the summer months. Like other Euphorbias, it contains a caustic, milky white latex.

Euphorbia pseudocactus requires bright light to maintain its vivid stem markings and compact structure. It performs best in full sun or very bright, filtered sunlight. In a greenhouse, 30% to 40% shade cloth is sufficient. Insufficient light will cause the stems to become thin and the mottled yellowish patterns to fade into a dull, uniform green.
Soil
A well-draining mineral substrate is essential for this species. A mixture of one part potting soil and two parts grit, such as pumice, fine gravel, or coarse river sand, works well. The soil must allow water to move through rapidly to prevent the root system from sitting in stagnant moisture, which can quickly lead to fungal decay.
Water
Water the plant thoroughly during the summer growing season whenever the soil has dried out completely. Use the “soak and dry” method to ensure the entire root ball receives moisture. As temperatures decrease in autumn, reduce the watering frequency. Keep the plant almost entirely dry during the winter months, providing only enough water to prevent the stems from shriveling excessively.
Pot size
Select a sturdy, wide pot to accommodate the clumping habit of the stems. As the plant produces underground runners that emerge as new stems, a wider “pan” style pot is often more appropriate than a deep, narrow one. Terracotta is the preferred material as it facilitates faster soil drying and provides better aeration.
Temperature
This species thrives in warm temperatures between 18Β°C and 30Β°C. It is relatively cold-tolerant compared to tropical Euphorbias but must be protected from frost. In very hot summer conditions, ensure the plant has adequate ventilation to prevent heat stress.
Humidity
Low to moderate humidity is ideal. High humidity in stagnant air can encourage the growth of surface fungi or “sooty mold” on the stems. Maintain constant airflow around the plant, especially during the humid summer months when the plant is being watered more frequently.
Fertilizing
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength once every four to six weeks during the active summer growth period. Do not fertilize during the winter dormancy. Proper nutrients support the development of thick, well-marked stem segments and encourage flowering.
Growing season
Euphorbia pseudocactus is a summer-growing species. It produces new stem segments and flowers from late spring through early autumn. During the winter, the plant enters a period of semi-dormancy where growth halts.
Propagation
This species is easily propagated through stem cuttings or by removing rooted offsets.
Stem cuttings: Take cuttings during the summer months. Use a sharp, sterile blade to cut at a joint between segments. Immediately rinse the cut ends with water to stop the latex flow. Allow the cutting to callus in a cool, dry place for at least two weeks. Insert the base of the segment into a gritty rooting medium and keep it dry until new growth appears at the tip.
Offsets: Mature clumps often produce new stems from underground runners. These can be carefully detached with their own roots already established and potted up individually during the spring or summer.
