Lophophora fricii

Lophophora fricii produces a distinct, pale greyish-green to yellowish-green button-like stem that features numerous well-defined, wavy ribs. This spineless cactus develops a subterranean taproot that stores water and anchors the plant firmly in its substrate. It forms a dense tuft of soft white wool at its growing apex. Unlike other members of its genus, it displays a highly variable rib structure and produces deep pink to carmine flowers that open repeatedly throughout the warm months.

Origin and Natural Habitat

This species occurs natively in the semi-arid lagoon regions near Viesca in Coahuila, Mexico. The plants inhabit flat, limestone-rich plains and low rocky hillsides. They grow primarily under the protective canopy of nurse plants or wedged tightly into limestone crevices. The natural environment experiences extreme heat, low rainfall, and highly alkaline soils. The large taproot allows the plant to retract flush with the soil level during extended periods of drought to prevent excessive moisture loss.

Plant Characteristics

The stem of Lophophora fricii can reach diameters of 8 cm to 12 cm, occasionally growing larger in old, clustering specimens. The epidermis lacks sharp spines entirely, possessing only small, woolly areoles along the rib margins. It produces funnel-shaped flowers from the central woolly vertex during the summer. These blossoms feature multiple layers of pointed petals ranging in color from pale pink to intense magenta. Following successful pollination, the plant develops elongated, pinkish-red seed pods containing small, black seeds.

Care Guide

Light
This cactus requires bright, filtered light to maintain its flat, natural appearance. Direct morning sun combined with afternoon shade yields the best results. In a greenhouse setting, 40% to 50% shade cloth protects the sensitive epidermis from scorching. Insufficient light levels cause the stem to elongate unnaturally, destroying its characteristic button shape.

Soil
An entirely mineral substrate is critical to prevent the large taproot from rotting. The LDP Super Drainage Mix provides the necessary limestone mimicry and rapid drainage through its premium blend of coarse pumice and fine gravel. Avoid potting soils containing high organic matter, peat, or bark.

Water
Water the plant thoroughly from spring through early autumn only when the substrate dries out completely. Use the strict soak and dry method. Withhold water completely from late autumn through the end of winter. The taproot requires absolute dryness during its cold rest period to survive without succumbing to fungal infections.

Pot size
Select a deep pot to accommodate the elongated taproot system. A deep terracotta container provides excellent stability and allows moisture to evaporate from the sides of the root zone. Ensure the pot size closely matches the diameter of the plant, leaving roughly 2 cm of clearance around the stem.

Temperature
This species thrives in hot summer temperatures between 25Β°C and 35Β°C. It requires a cool winter rest period with temperatures dropping to around 10Β°C to induce flowering. It can survive brief drops near freezing if the soil remains completely dry. Keep the plant safe from frost at all times.

Humidity
Maintain low air humidity in the growing area. Excellent ventilation is essential to keep the central wool dry and healthy. Stagnant, humid conditions promote rot at the soil line and invite pests. Use mechanical fans if growing the plant in a closed indoor space or greenhouse.

Fertilizing
Apply a low-nitrogen, high-potassium liquid fertilizer once in late spring. Dilute the mixture to quarter strength. Do not fertilize the plant during summer or winter dormancy. Excessive nutrients cause the epidermis to split open, creating permanent scars on the slow-growing stem.

Growing Season

Lophophora fricii grows actively from late spring through late summer. It produces its pink flowers in successive flushes during this warm period. The plant enters a deep dormancy in winter, during which the stem may shrivel and shrink slightly into the soil. This shrinking is normal behavior. The plant regains its turgidity with the first watering in spring.

Propagation

You can propagate this species successfully through seed sowing.

Seed Germination Sow the small black seeds in spring using a sterile, purely mineral mix. Cover the seeds with a very thin layer of fine grit to secure them. Maintain a constant temperature of 25Β°C to 28Β°C under bright, indirect light. Keep the humidity high using a transparent cover until germination occurs, which takes about one to two weeks. Seedlings grow slowly and require several years of careful moisture management before they develop a resilient taproot.
