Sansevieria gracilis f. variegata
Sansevieria gracilis f. variegata is a small succulent in the family Asparagaceae. This variegated form features slender, cylindrical leaves that taper to a sharp point. The foliage displays a striking contrast between deep green centers and outer leaves that are creamy yellow. Unlike many upright species in the genus, this plant exhibits a unique stoloniferous growth habit, producing new plantlets on long, thin runners that arch through the air or crawl along the ground.
Origin and Natural Habitat
The parent species is native to East Africa, primarily found in Kenya, Tanzania, and Malawi. It inhabits dry, rocky bushlands and deciduous woodlands, often growing in the dappled shade of shrubs. While the variegated form is a horticultural selection, it retains the resilience of its wild ancestors. Its natural growth habit allows it to colonize rocky crevices by “walking” across the terrain via its elevated stolons, which eventually touch down to establish new root systems.
Plant Characteristics
The leaves grow in a spiral rosette, typically reaching lengths of 15 cm to 30 cm. Each leaf is channeled at the base and becomes fully cylindrical toward the tip. The variegation is often unstable, meaning the intensity and placement of the yellow stripes can vary from leaf to leaf.
Care Guide
Light
Sansevieria gracilis prefers a lightly shaded location in the greenhouse. Avoid keeping it in the sun, as this will cause the variegated leaves to burn. In nature, Sansevieria generally grow at the base of large shrubs where they can receive enough light while still being somewhat protected from some of the sun’s harshness, and this needs to be emulated in cultivation.
Soil
Variegated Sansevieria gracilis require a well-draining soil mixture mainly consisting of organic components. A medium with coco peat is preferred.
Water
In cultivation, Sansevieria can be watered well during the warmer months. However, this genus should be watered as sparingly as possible in winter. Sansevieria is extremely prone to rot if it sits in wet soil, and particularly so when dormant.
Pot size
This Sansevieria stays relatively small. Small offsets will grow well in a 10cm pot, but as the plant grows older, it should be planted in a pot that is 5cm wider than its outermost leaves to accommodate new growth.
Temperature
The ideal temperature for Sansevieria ranges between 15 – 25°C. It can tolerate 5 – 35°C. This genus does not tolerate frost at all.
Humidity
Sansevieria are somewhat sensitive to humidity, so make sure that your growing space has plenty of airflow. Humidity should not rise above 30-50%.
Fertilizing
Use a half-strength diluted general liquid fertilizer only during the growing season. Do not fertilize during winter. Alternatively, a small amount of slow-release fertilizer will be sufficient.
Growing season
Sansevieria grow actively in spring and summer, and are dormant during winter.
Propagation
Sansevieria can be easily propagated from leaves and cuttings.
Leaves: Gently remove one of the outermost leaves, and place it on top of your usual growing medium. The leaf will eventually make roots after 2-3 weeks. At this point, cover the base of the leaf with some soil. It will then produce plantlets after some time.
Stem propagation: Using a sharp, clean knife, cut an offset of the Sansevieria from the main stem. Let this dry for 10 days, then plant it. The best time to propagate is early spring.
