Origin and Natural Habitat
This Sarracenia purpurea hybrid does not occur naturally.
Plant Characteristics
Unlike most other pitcher plants that grow tall and upright, Sarracenia purpurea produces short, squat, ‘belly-shaped’ pitchers that sit close to the ground in a low rosette. These pitchers are often a deep, rich purple or maroon with prominent veining. This species is unique because its pitchers are designed to collect rainwater. It relies on a combination of its own enzymes and a community of beneficial bacteria living within the pitcher fluid to digest its prey. The pitchers are exceptionally long-lived and often remain functional for two years.
Care Guide
Light
This plant requires full sun to look its best. To achieve the intense deep purple-red colouration, it should receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight every day. If grown in the shade, the pitchers will lose their dark pigment and remain a dull green, and the plant will eventually lose its vigour.
Soil
A standard carnivorous plant medium of 50% peat moss and 50% perlite or coarse silica sand is ideal. Many growers also find great success using pure long-fiber sphagnum moss. As always, ensure the medium is completely free of added fertilizers or lime.
Water
Sarracenia purpurea must be kept wet year-round. Use the ‘tray method’ by sitting the pot in a saucer of mineral-free water about 2cm deep. It is also important to ensure the pitchers themselves are about half-full of water at all times. Since this species relies on rain to fill its traps, you should manually add a little distilled water or rainwater into the pitchers if they become dry.
Pot size
Because this species forms a spreading rosette, a wider pot is often better than a deep one. A 12cm to 15cm plastic pot is usually sufficient for a mature specimen. Plastic is the preferred material as it retains moisture well and does not leach minerals into the acidic soil.
Temperature
This is one of the hardiest carnivorous plants in existence. It is extremely cold-tolerant and can survive being frozen solid in winter. In warmer climates, it handles summer heat well as long as the water tray is kept full.
Humidity
This species is quite adaptable to different humidity levels, though it appreciates the higher humidity found in boggy environments. Good air circulation is important to prevent any fungal issues on the low-lying foliage.
Fertilizing
Never apply fertilizer to the soil. The plant is perfectly capable of catching its own insects. If the plant is kept in a space where no insects are present, you can occasionally drop a small insect into the water-filled pitchers during the growing season.
Growing season
The primary growing season is from spring through autumn. Unlike many other Sarracenia, the pitchers of S. purpurea are evergreen and will persist through the winter months even while the plant is resting.
Propagation
Sarracenia purpurea can be propagated via seed or by dividing the rhizome.
Rhizome division: This is best done in late winter while the plant is still dormant. Carefully cut the creeping rhizome into sections, ensuring each piece has its own set of roots and at least one growth bud.
Seed germination: Seeds require a cold stratification period of 4 to 6 weeks in a damp environment (such as a refrigerator) before they will sprout. Once stratified, sow them on the surface of wet peat moss in a bright, warm location.
