Dorstenia foetida f. variegata

Dorstenia foetida f. variegata is a succulent perennial in the family Moraceae. It features a thick, dark green to greyish caudex that stores water for survival during dry periods. This variegated form produces lanceolate leaves with irregular patterns of cream, yellow, and light green. The most distinct feature is the “hypanthodium,” a flat, shield-like structure that bears many tiny flowers and explosively ejects ripe seeds several meters away.

Origin and Natural Habitat

Dorstenia foetida occurs across East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, including Ethiopia, Somalia, and Yemen. It inhabits rocky outcrops, bushlands, and gravelly slopes. The variegated form is a selection maintained in cultivation and rarely seen in nature.

Plant Characteristics

The plant develops a stout, cylindrical stem that functions as a water reservoir. Its variegated leaves grow in a spiral arrangement at the top of the stem, creating a palm-like appearance. The flowers lack petals and instead sit on a fleshy, star-shaped structure. Because the plant disperses seeds forcefully, new seedlings frequently appear in neighboring pots. Unlike many other succulents, this species does not require a second plant for pollination.

Care Guide

Light
Dorstenia foetida f. variegata requires bright, indirect light to maintain its variegation. Intense, direct afternoon sun can scorch the delicate variegated sections of the leaves. In a greenhouse, 50% to 60% shade cloth provides the best results. Insufficient light will cause the plant to lose its yellow patterns and become uncharacteristically leggy.

Soil
Use a gritty, well-draining mineral substrate. Use LDP EcoGrit Mix to ensure quick water runoff and proper root oxygenation.

Water
Water the plant thoroughly during the summer growing season whenever the soil dries out. In very hot weather, the plant may require more frequent watering to prevent leaf drop. As temperatures cool in autumn, reduce the frequency. If the plant enters a leafless dormancy in winter, keep the soil almost completely dry.

Pot size
A small to medium-sized pot is sufficient for this species, as it does not possess an aggressive root system. Select a container that provides roughly 2cm to 3cm of space around the caudex. Deep pots are unnecessary and may retain too much moisture at the base.

Temperature
This species thrives in warm temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. It has very little tolerance for cold. Move the plant to a warmer location if temperatures drop below 10°C. Protect it from all frost, as cold, damp conditions quickly cause the caudex to rot.

Humidity
The plant tolerates average household humidity but benefits from good airflow. Stagnant air encourages pests like mealybugs and spider mites. Ensure the growing space has consistent ventilation, especially during humid summer months.

Fertilizing
Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer at half-strength every three to four weeks during the active growing season. Do not fertilize during the winter rest period. Proper feeding supports the development of new variegated foliage and frequent flowering.

Growing Season

This is a summer-growing species. It produces new leaves and flowers from late spring through early autumn. Depending on local conditions, the plant may drop its leaves in winter. If this occurs, stop watering and wait for new growth to emerge in spring before resuming a regular schedule.

Propagation

You can propagate this variety through seeds.

Seed germination: Collect seeds by placing a mesh bag over the flowers or harvesting them from nearby pots. Sow seeds in spring in a warm, moist, and sandy mix. They usually germinate quickly in temperatures above 22°C. Note that not all seedlings from a variegated parent will show variegation.

Product FAQS

To mimic their natural environments, succulents should receive infrequent, but heavy watering during their growing season. Soak the soil once every 10-14 days, then allow it to dry before watering again.
