Euphorbia ‘Cocklebur’ produces short, pine-cone-shaped stems covered in corky tubercles with tufts of green leaves at the apex, resembling a miniature pineapple. This hybrid plant forms a compact underground caudex and clusters into tight colonies over time. It creates an unusual focal point for specialized collections due to its distinct geometric shape. It is also known as Euphorbia xjaponica.
Origin and Natural Habitat
This plant exists entirely as a horticultural hybrid created by crossing Euphorbia bupleurifolia and Euphorbia susannae. It inherits traits from both parent species native to South Africa. Cultivated specimens adapt well to container growing under controlled conditions that mimic dry, rocky habitats.
Plant Characteristics
The stem reaches up to 5 cm long and 4 cm in diameter, featuring prominent spiral tubercles left by fallen leaves. Lance-shaped, deciduous leaves emerge in dense tufts at the tip during active growth periods. The plant sheds these leaves during dormancy.
