Lithops herrei

Lithops herrei features a deeply fissure-split pair of pale, greenish-grey leaves covered in fine, dark green translucent windows and irregular greyish-white islands. This miniature succulent mimics the appearance of natural pebbles to blend perfectly into its native desert background, preventing herbivores from spotting it. It grows as a compact individual body or forms small, tight clusters of two to four heads from a single, deep taproot system.

Origin and Natural Habitat

This species occurs natively in the extremely arid Richtersveld region of the Northern Cape, South Africa, and extends into southern Namibia. The plants inhabit rocky quartzite hillsides and gravelly plains within the winter-rainfall zone. They experience a severe climate with low rainfall, intense heat, and heavy coastal fog. The waxy leaf windows filter light before it reaches the chlorophyll layer deep within the buried stem body, protecting the plant from the intense ultraviolet radiation of the desert.

Plant Characteristics

The individual obconical bodies of Lithops herrei reach heights of 2 cm to 3 cm and widths of roughly 2 cm across the top surface. The slightly convex top face displays a distinct network of fine, dark green lines or dots that form miniature window panes. It produces a large, daisy-like white flower with a yellow center from the central fissure during autumn. These blossoms open in the bright afternoon sun and close again at dusk. The plant undergoes an annual leaf regeneration cycle where the old leaves split completely apart to feed a new pair.

Care Guide

Light
This plant requires maximum light exposure to maintain its compact, flat profile and vivid window patterns. Provide at least four to five hours of direct morning sunlight daily. In a greenhouse setting, use a very light 20% shade cloth only during extreme summer heatwaves. Insufficient light causes the bodies to stretch upward, weaken, and collapse.

Soil
Use a purely mineral substrate to prevent root rot and mimic the natural quartz fields. The LDP Super Drainage Mix offers the perfect fast-draining medium for this species. It consists of coarse pumice, fine gravel, and zero peat content. Avoid standard potting soils or any mediums that retain dampness.

Water
Water the plant thoroughly from late summer through autumn whenever the body shows slight wrinkling along the sides. Use the strict soak and dry method. Stop watering completely when the central fissure splits open to reveal the new leaves in winter. The plant must absorb all moisture from the old outer leaf pair to complete its growth cycle. Resume watering only in spring when the old leaves dry down to thin paper wrappers.

Pot size
Select a deep terracotta pot to accommodate the long, carrot-like taproot system. A deep container allows the root base to stretch downward naturally. Avoid oversized pots, as large volumes of empty substrate hold unnecessary water and cause the root system to rot. Leave only 1 cm to 2 cm of clearance around the plant body.

Temperature
This species thrives in warm conditions between 22°C and 32°C during its active phases. It tolerates the cool winter temperatures of its native habitat but requires complete protection against frost. Maintain a minimum winter temperature of 8°C to ensure the root zone remains safe from cold damage.

Humidity
Maintain exceptionally low humidity levels in the growing environment. This desert succulent requires excellent air movement around its body to prevent fungal spotting. Avoid damp indoor corners or closed, unventilated glass terrariums.

Fertilizing
Do not apply high-nitrogen fertilizers to this species. A very weak, low-nitrogen liquid fertilizer diluted to quarter strength can be applied once in late summer. Avoid feeding the plant during winter or spring. Excessive nutrients cause the bodies to bloat, split open horizontally, and rot.

Growing Season

Lithops herrei follows a strict annual cycle, showing active root growth and flowering from late summer through autumn. It slows down significantly in winter while it completes its internal leaf exchange phase. The plant enters a semi-dormant state during the peak heat of summer, during which it requires very little moisture. It relies heavily on cool evening air and natural ventilation to break its summer rest.

Propagation

You can propagate this species primarily through seed sowing.

Seed Germination: Sow fresh seeds in early autumn using a sterile, purely mineral seed-starting mix. Scatter the microscopic seeds evenly across the surface but do not cover them, as they require light to trigger germination. Keep the substrate lightly moist by misting the surface daily and cover the container with a transparent lid to maintain high humidity. Place the tray in a bright area away from direct sunlight at a constant temperature around 20°C. Seeds usually germinate within one to two weeks, after which you must gradually remove the lid to increase airflow. Seedlings grow slowly and require meticulous water management for their first year.

Product FAQS

To mimic their natural environments, succulents should receive infrequent, but heavy watering during their growing season. Soak the soil once every 10-14 days, then allow it to dry before watering again.
