This plant occurs natively in the arid, quartz-strewn plains of the Knersvlakte and near Vredendal in the Western Cape of South Africa. Plants grow in exposed, open locations where coarse quartz gravel covers the ground. These harsh environments provide extreme sun exposure and rapid drainage during winter rainfall events.

Seed Germination: Sow the small white seeds in early autumn using an organic mixture like our LDP EcoGrit Mix. Seeds must be sown as fresh as possible. Cover the seeds with a very thin layer of fine grit to secure them. Maintain a constant temperature of 20Β°C to 25Β°C under bright, indirect light. Keep the humidity high using a transparent cover until germination occurs, which takes between two and four weeks. Seedlings grow slowly and require several years of careful moisture management before they develop a resilient caudex.
