Othonna lepidocaulis

Othonna lepidocaulis produces a swollen, yellowish caudex covered in scaly, raised markings left by fallen leaves from previous seasons. This rare winter-growing caudiciform species develops slender branches that bear small, deciduous foliage during the cool wet months.

Origin and Natural Habitat

This plant occurs natively in the arid, quartz-strewn plains of the Knersvlakte and near Vredendal in the Western Cape of South Africa. Plants grow in exposed, open locations where coarse quartz gravel covers the ground. These harsh environments provide extreme sun exposure and rapid drainage during winter rainfall events.

Plant Characteristics

The branched, succulent stems rise from a thick, water-storing caudex that reaches up to seven centimeters in diameter. Yellowish bark features prominent leaf scars arranged in a scaly texture along the stems. Small, fleshy leaves emerge with the onset of cool autumn temperatures and drop off during the hot summer rest period. Bright yellow, daisy-shaped flower heads appear on slender stalks high above the foliage during the winter growing season.

Care Guide

Light
Provide bright, filtered light or morning sun. Intense midday exposure scorches the succulent stems and damages cell walls. Bright light maintains the compact zig-zag growth habit.

Soil
The specialized root system demands rapid drainage to prevent fatal root rot. Plant the specimen in LDP Super Drainage Mix to ensure quick water runoff and optimal root oxygenation.

Water
Water thoroughly during the cool autumn and winter growth cycle. Allow the soil medium to dry out completely between watering sessions. Withhold all moisture entirely during the hot summer dormancy period when the plant drops its leaves.

Pot Size
Select a deep pot or terracotta container accommodating the developing caudex and root system. Avoid oversized containers that retain excess moisture around the base.

Temperature
Keep ambient temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. Protect the plant from hard frost and freezing conditions.

Humidity
Maintain low humidity and high airflow. Stagnant air invites fungal decay during the dormant phase.

Fertilizing
Apply a balanced liquid succulent fertilizer diluted to quarter strength once at the start of the winter growth season. Stop fertilizing completely during the summer dormancy phase.

Growing Season

Othonna lepidocaulis grows actively during the cool autumn and winter months. It enters a strict dormancy and drops its leaves during the hot summer.

Propagation

You can propagate this species through seed germination.

Seed Germination: Sow the small white seeds in early autumn using an organic mixture like our LDP EcoGrit Mix. Seeds must be sown as fresh as possible. Cover the seeds with a very thin layer of fine grit to secure them. Maintain a constant temperature of 20°C to 25°C under bright, indirect light. Keep the humidity high using a transparent cover until germination occurs, which takes between two and four weeks. Seedlings grow slowly and require several years of careful moisture management before they develop a resilient caudex.

Product FAQS

To mimic their natural environments, succulents should receive infrequent, but heavy watering during their growing season. Soak the soil once every 10-14 days, then allow it to dry before watering again.
