People from all corners of the world have caught the succulent bug. Not all of them are lucky enough to have a garden or greenhouse to keep their plants in, though. So the question is, can you successfully grow indoor succulents?
Providing light for indoor succulents
The single most important need for a plant is light. This is also the most difficult thing to provide for when growing in an enclosed house. Youβll need to make sure your plants are kept in a bright windowsill, but keep in mind that if your succulent gets direct sun through a glass window, it might burn if itβs not used to the light. You can also invest in a grow light if a windowsill isnβt an option.
Some plants will only thrive with enough light
Air flow
What few people realize is that plants need good airflow to grow properly. If they sit in a stale room with no fresh air, they will not be happy! Make sure to leave a window open for your indoor succulents, and leave a fan on in the room to keep the air moving.
Temperature
Depending on the house, it can get quite warm or even a bit too cold for a plant to survive, depending on where in the house it is. Make sure to choose a spot in your house that gets moderate temperatures throughout the day. Also, keep in mind that frost can creep through a window. If itβs going to be extra cold, move your plants off the windowsill! You can also consider using a heat mat, which will provide your plant with a little bit of extra warmth.
Suggestions for indoor succulents
From the above, one can infer it will be a bit difficult to grow a plant successfully indoors. There are a few that do well inside the home, including plants like Sansevieria, otherwise known as βsnake plantsβ or βmother in lawβs tongueβ. If your bathroom has a decently sized window that lets in some light, you can also grow plants like String of Turtles, as they prefer high humidity and less light.
Plants like Echeveria and most cacti will struggle indoors as they require plenty of light and fresh air, so do keep that in mind when buying plants for your home.
