Origin and Natural Habitat of Lithops
Lithops are native to the arid regions of South Africa and Namibia. In the wild, these plants grow in rocky environments where they blend in perfectly with the surrounding landscape to avoid herbivores.
Plant Characteristics
Lithops are famous for their unique leaf pairs that resemble stones. Each plant consists of two thick, fleshy leaves with a “fissure” in the center. They come in a vast array of colors and patterns, ranging from earthy browns and greys to greens and even purples. These plants are slow growing, and will produce white or yellow flowers (depending on the species) in autumn once they reach maturity.
The Terracotta Pot
The included Terracotta Pot is slightly deeper than standard plastic pots, which is ideal for the taproots of Lithops. It allows them the space they need without holding excessive moisture at the bottom. Terracotta also allows the soil to dry much faster than plastic, which is super important for Lithops.
Special Lithops Mix
Lithops are highly specialized and require growing mediums that are formulated specifically for them. We blend our Lithops Mix to mimic their natural rocky habitat. It ensures that water passes through quickly, preventing the root rot that often occurs with standard potting soils.
Care Guide
Light
Lithops need bright, filtered light for most of the day. In cultivation, we recommend using about 60% shade cloth. Avoid keeping them in deep shade, as this will cause them to stretch and lose their natural compact shape. Avoid full direct sun in cultivation to reduce stress.
Soil
Always use the provided Lithops Mix. If you ever repot them in the future, ensure the medium is primarily inorganic, with plenty of akadama or pumice.
Water
Only water Lithops during their active growing seasons in autumn and spring. Give them a good soaking and then wait for the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Keep them completely dry in summer when they are dormant. Also avoid watering in winter when they are “splitting” to produce new leaves.
Temperature
Their ideal temperature ranges between 15°C and 25°C. While these hardy plants tolerate temperatures between 5°C and 35°C, frost easily damages them, so you must protect them during cold winter nights.
Humidity
Lithops prefer dry conditions and plenty of airflow. High humidity can lead to fungal issues or rot, so ensure your growing area is well ventilated.
Fertilizing
These plants are adapted to nutrient poor soils. You can use a half strength diluted liquid fertilizer once or twice during the autumn growing season. Alternatively, some slow release fertilizer also works.
Growing Season
Lithops grow actively during autumn and early spring.
