Echeveria ‘Fantastic Fountain’
Echeveria ‘Fantastic Fountain’ forms a tall, mounding colony of cascading, blue-green foliage. It matures into a fountain-like shape as the stems lengthen and the leaves layer downward. Strong light and cool temperatures shift the leaf color from blue-green to deep pink and purple tones.
Origin and Natural Habitat
This hybrid originated in Taiwan through selective breeding. It does not occur in nature.
Plant Characteristics
The plant grows up to 30 cm tall, with rosettes reaching 15 cm in diameter. Dense layers of elliptical, keeled leaves hide the stem as the plant ages. Offsets form readily at the base, creating a dense cluster. It produces long stalks topped with orange to yellow, bell-shaped flowers during the warmer months.
Care Guide
Light
Provide bright, indirect light. Intense afternoon sun causes leaf burn and tissue damage. Bright light maintains the compact form and encourages vibrant pink color development.
Soil
The roots require high aeration to prevent decay. Use LDP Super Drainage Mix to ensure quick water runoff and healthy root oxygenation.
Water
Water the soil directly during the active growth periods of spring and summer. Allow the substrate to dry out completely before you apply water again. Withhold water during the winter dormancy to prevent root rot. Never pour water into the center of the rosette.
Pot Size
Select a pot with large drainage holes. Choose a container slightly wider than the clump diameter to allow for offset development. Shallow, wide pots work well for the mounding habit.
Temperature
Keep temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. Protect the plant from frost and freezing conditions.
Humidity
Maintain constant, active airflow. Stagnant air trapped within the dense leaf layers encourages fungal growth and pests.
Fertilizing
Apply a liquid succulent fertilizer diluted to quarter strength once or twice during the spring and summer growth cycles. Do not feed during the winter dormant phase.
Growing Season
Echeveria ‘Fantastic Fountain’ grows actively during the warm spring and summer months. It enters a dormant state during the cool winter.
Propagation
You can propagate this hybrid through offset division or leaf cuttings.
Offset Division: Remove healthy pups from the base of the main plant during spring or summer. Use a sterile blade to separate the offset. Allow the cut end to callus in a shaded area for three days. Plant the pup into dry LDP Super Drainage Mix and wait one week before applying light water.
Leaf Cuttings: Twist a firm, healthy leaf from the main stem during the active growing season. Ensure the base of the leaf remains intact. Place the leaf on a dry, mineral-based substrate in bright, indirect light. Mist the surface occasionally once tiny roots or a new plantlet appear at the base.
