Haworthia badia

Haworthia badia displays dark brownish-green, flat-topped rosette leaves featuring glassy, translucent end-windows that capture sunlight. This rare species showcases deep chocolate coloration and broad leaf tips that set it apart from standard green forms.

Origin and Natural Habitat

This plant originates from shale flats and rocky clay slopes in the Riversdale district of the Western Cape region in South Africa. Plants grow wedged into narrow soil pockets under the protective shade of low scrub. These natural microenvironments provide rapid drainage and protection from scorching solar exposure.

Plant Characteristics

The compact rosette grows up to eight centimeters in diameter, forming slow offsets from the base. Fleshy, truncate leaves possess broad, glossy windows that allow light penetration into internal cellular tissue. Pigmentation shifts between deep green and dark chocolate tones depending on light exposure. Small white tubular flowers emerge on slender stalks during autumn. The root system consists of thick, fleshy roots requiring proper aeration.

Care Guide

Light
Provide bright, filtered light. Direct sun burns the translucent leaf windows and causes the tissue to turn brown. A position with morning sun or 50% shade cloth maintains the natural, compact form.

Soil
The roots require a highly porous, mineral substrate to prevent rot. Use LDP Super Drainage Mix to maximize aeration.

Water
Water the plant thoroughly during the active autumn and spring growth months. Stop all water completely when the plant enters its summer dormancy. Allow the substrate to dry out fully before you apply water again.

Pot Size
Select deep, narrow pots to accommodate the long, fleshy root system. Avoid wide containers that hold excess moisture around the base.

Temperature
Keep temperatures between 15°C and 25°C. The plant tolerates cool winter nights well but requires protection from severe frost.

Humidity
Maintain constant, active airflow. Stagnant humidity triggers fungal decay within the dense, compact leaf clusters.

Fertilizing
Feed the plant only twice a year using a liquid succulent fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength. Apply the fertilizer during the active autumn and spring growth cycles. Avoid feeding during summer dormancy to prevent root burn.

Growing Season

Haworthia badia grows actively during the cool autumn, winter, and spring months. It slows its metabolism significantly during the peak heat of summer to conserve moisture. Adjust your watering schedule to match these distinct seasonal growth pulses.

Propagation

You can propagate this species through seed, offset division or leaf propagation.

Offset Division: Separate the small offsets from the base of the parent rosette during the autumn repotting window. Use a sterile blade to cut the connection, ensuring each piece retains healthy roots. Allow the separated offsets to dry in a well-ventilated space for three days to callus. Plant each pup into fresh mineral substrate and keep the soil dry for one week before watering lightly.

Leaf Propagation: Gently twist a healthy leaf away from the main stem during early autumn, ensuring you remove the entire leaf base cleanly. Let the detached leaf rest in a dry, shaded area for one week until a thick callus forms over the wound. Place the callused leaf flat on top of a pot filled with LDP Super Drainage Mix. Keep the medium slightly damp until small roots and new plantlets appear after several months.

Product FAQS

To mimic their natural environments, succulents should receive infrequent, but heavy watering during their growing season. Soak the soil once every 10-14 days, then allow it to dry before watering again.
